Imaging California
Pilot Study
The UCSB Biogeography
Lab and the California Department
of Forestry and Fire Protection have embarked on a pilot study
to investigate fine scale change on landscape scale land cover classes.
The state of California has taken a series of steps to ensure the
sustainable management of the state's forest, range, brush, and watershed
ecosystems. Through a memorandum of understanding on biological diversity,
26 partners-including state and federal agencies, the University of
California, and local governments-have initiated a process that promotes
regional cooperation in conservation planning and natural resources
management. As part of this movement towards a better understanding
of the state's biodiversity, CDF and the Biogeography Lab are in the
process of building the framework for an ongoing assessment of change
in the land cover of California using a time series of Landsat
TM images. For the purpose of this pilot we will focus on the
South Coast region of California. The project has triggered the interest
of local and regional organizations looking to incorporate these data
to further their goals of ecosystem conservation and sustainable economic
development.
