SITE FACTORS:
Surface temperatures become extremely high during the summer. In less windy areas or on smaller dunes with more available water, perennial vegetation can survive long drought periods. Total cover increases as the dunes are progressively stabilized.
DISTRIBUTION:
Area of sand accumulation in the desert. Active dunes are well developed in Eureka Valley and Death Valley, Inyo County; near Kelso, San Bernardino County; Thousand Palms, Riverside County; between El Centro and Yuma, Imperial County, and to a lesser extent in Borrego Valley, San Diego County. Elevations from near sea level to about 4,000 feet (1210 m).
