Essentially barren expanses of actively moving sand whose size and shape are determined by abiotic site factors rather than by stabilizing vegetation.
Site Factors:
Surface temperatures become extremely high during the summer. May intergrade with Stabilized and Partially-stabilized Desert Dunes (22200) in less windy areas or on smaller dunes with more available water.
DISTRIBUTION:
Areas of sand accumulation in the desert. Well developed in Eureka Valley and Death Valley, Inyo County; near Kelso, San Bernardino County; Thousand Palms, Riverside County; between El Centro and Yuma, Imperial County, and to a lesser extent in Borrego Valley, San Diego County.
